Welcome you all to the function

It is my privilege and pleasure to present before you the annual report of the college, in brief, for the academic year 2010-11. This academic year was a year of covetable achievements for us not only in the academic sphere, but also in the fields of sports, seminars, workshops, symposia, quiz competitions and other extra curricular activities.

At the outset, I wish to state that this report mainly enumerates the activities of the departments and college in general. The secretary of the college union will be presenting another report incorporating the details of activities organized by the college union.

I took over charge as principal from Dr. C.R. Susheela Devi on 2-04-2010. 2010-11 has been a very rewarding year for the College both in the curricular and co-curricular fields. We are accredited by NAAC at the B++ level in 2006 and has to go for reaccreditation soon which makes our responsibility even higher and hope that the college will be able to reach the heights it well deserves


1. COURSES AND STUDENT STRENGTH

Our college offers 14 UG and 11 PG courses and has about 2000 students on its roll. In addition we also offer certificate and Add on courses. UG courses follow the choice based Credit and Semester System, following the re-structuring of the UG courses by MG University since 2009.


2. UNIVERSITY EXAMINATION RESULTS

The college has also secured good results in all degree and PG courses.

5. Demise

The sad demise of Prof. K.R. Hariharan, Dept. of Chemistry is a great loss to the institution and Dept. of Chemistry in particular. On behalf of entire college community, I express my heartfelt condolence to his family members and pray for his soul to rest in peace.

I make use of this occassion to express my sincere gratitude for the whole hearted co-operation and help rendered by each one of the administrative staff.


MEMBERSHIP IN THE ACADEMIC BODIES OF MAHATMA GANDHI UNIVERSITY.

As a recognition of our college Dr. P.K. Padmakumar, Dept. of Botany and Dr. C.S. Ajith Kumar, Dept. of Hindi elected to the Member of the Senate, M.G. University and various teachers from various departments of this college were nominated as PG Board of Studies members in the current year.


6. UGC GRANTS SANCTIONED

During the year 2010-11, In addition to the amount sanctioned for the XI plan of Rs. 65 lakhs, was sanctioned by the UGC for the college 13 lakhs, for 13 minor research projects 3 lakhs, for seminars 9 lakhs for 2 Major research projects.

25 lakhs as Additional grant, 10 lakhs as one time grant for accredited colleges,

Till now UGC sanctioned 2.07 crores as grant for the XIth plan period. The grant was utilized to install Public Address system in all the class rooms and departments, Generator to Main Block, LCD & Laptops to all departments, Smart Boards, Green Boards, laboratory equipments, Computers etc. I appreciate Dr. K. Radhakrishnan General Co-ordinator, Dr. Sujatha S. Co-ordinator and all committee members of the UGC cell for their sincere efforts


i) Language Lab

The department of English houses a full fledged Language laboratory. The Language Laboratory is used for language tutorials. These are attended by preparatory courses students and students who voluntarily opt for Remedial English classes. Lessons and excercises are recorded on a weekly basis so that the students are exposed to a variety of listening and speaking drills. This especially benefits students who are deficient in English and also aims at confidence-building for interviews and competitive examinations. The Language Laboratory sessions also include word games, quizzes, extemporary speaking, debates, skits etc.

A reading cum reference Library has been set to cater to the educational needs of the Postgraduate students of the Department of English. Internet facilities are integrated to provide current, complete, and accurate answers to an amazing array of questions when print sources fail. Library management System is designed & developed for a receipt and issuance of books in the library along with the students details.

ii) Digital Library

Using the additional assistance sanctioned by the UGC, steps are taken to initiate a full fledged Digital Library in our College. Dr. Sujatha S. is the co-ordinator


iii) Multi Gym

It has been endorsed on the Physical Education Department to install Multi Gym under this scheme.


CENTRE OF POTENTIAL FOR EXCELLENCE

Our proposal for considering this institution as the Centre of Potential for excellence has been recommended by M.G. University and forwarded to UGC Delhi. Its evaluation is going on.


UGC MAJOR RESEARCH PROJECTS

This year two major research projects are awarded by UGC to the following teachers.

UGC MINOR RESEARCH PROJECTS

Research committee of this college has taken initiative to submit maximum number of project proposals for Research Projects and National Seminars. 4. REMARKABLE OTHER ACTIVITIES OF THE COLLEGE

1. International Seminar on Space Science and Technology

Research committee, and Department of Physics of NSS Hindu College have jointly organized an International Seminar on Space Science and Technology on 12th and 13th October 2010. Hon'ble General Secretary of Nair Service Society Adv. P.K. Narayana Panicker has inaugurated the function and key note address was delivered by Prof. Jean Pierre St-Maurice, Chair, Institute for space and Atmospheric Studies, Canada. The inaugural function was presided by the Principal and felicitations were offered by Prof. Chandra Mohan, Council Secretary, and Dr. S. Sujatha, Convenor, UGC Cell. Dr. K. Unnikrishnan, general coordinator of the seminar has delivered welcome speech and Dr. P.S. Gopakumar, PTA secretary proposed vote of thanks.

2. National Seminar on Kathakali


A two day National Seminar on Kathakali was organized by the Dept. of Malayalam on 18th and 19th February 2011. The seminar was inaugurated by Prof. R. Prasannakumar, Secretary, N.S.S. Colleges Central Committee and the principal presided over the function. The seminar was concluded with the performance of Nalacharitham Attakkatha by Padmasree Kalamandalam Gopi and team. Other luminaries presented papers are Dr. T.N. Vasudevan, Dr. S.S. Sreekumar, Dr. V. Rajeev, Dr. Raju Vallikkunnam, Dr. N.P. Vijayakrishnan etc.

Along with this major programme the department of Malayalam conducted various notable programmes in the current year. Commemoration of Mahakavi Ulloor, Felicitation of Prof. Ettumanoor Somadasan, Commemoration of the famous poet Dr. Nellickal Muraleedharan, Publication of a Research Journal and two one day National Seminars on Pourastya Kavya Meemamsa and Malayalam Poetry. The department also conducted two workshops exclusively for Research scholars and PG students of Malayalam. The another notable achievement of the department of Malayam is the launching of an online Magazine Prajnjapadhamblog.spot.com. Dr. Scaria Zacharia, Rtd. Professor of SS University, Kalady, Dr. N. Sam, Professor, University of Kerala, Padmasree Kalamandalam Gopi, Dr. C.R. Prasad, University of Kerala, Dr. S.S. Sreekumar, University of Pondichery, Dr. T.N. Vasudevan Rtd. Professor of Calicut University, Dr. N.P. Vijayakrishnan, the renowned art critic and famous poet Ettumanoor Somadasan are the accomplished personalities who entered in the platform of the department of Malayalam current year. The department is running with attractive results.

The department of Hindi one of the prestigious department of this college conducted various programmes in this academic year. Prof. P. Madhavan Pillai the renowned writer and former HOD of Hindi of this college delivered a talk on Vishnu Prabhakars Yayathi in a seminar session. The various students of Hindi department have won various literary competitions placed in first and second prize. The research department of Hindi produced 3 PhDs, including Prof. T.N. Bhanu in the same department current year. The results of the students of Hindi is also quite notable.

Post Graduate and Research department of Zoology is organising a national seminar on current trends in Biotechnology and Bioinforativs on 4th and 5th March 2011. Dr. K. Mohan Das, Honarable Vice Chancellor, Kerala University of Healthscience will inaugurate the seminar.

Dr. Mohan Rao, Uty. Of Agriculture science, Bangalore, Dr. M. Krishnan, HOD, Environmental Biotechnology, Dr. P.S. Parthasarathy, HOD, Dept. of Bioinformatics, Bharatidasa University, Thiruchirappally will deliver theme presentations.

Post Graduate Dept. of Chemistry organised a National Seminar on New frontiens in Chemical Sciences and Technology on 18th & 19th March 2011. Adv. P.K. Narayana Panicker Honarable Generala Secretary of Nair Service Society will inaugurate the function. Theme presentations will be delivered by Dr. A. Ajayaghosh, Scientist, H IISER, TVM, Dr. M.R. Prathachandrakurup, Cochin university, Dr. Sabu Thomas, Director, School of Chemical Science, M.G. University, Dr. K. George Thomas, Scientists, NIIST TVM and Dr. Balborot, lake Michegam College, USA.


Prof. Kadambaran namboothiri Memorial All Kerala Inter-collegiate Quiz completion

Botany department has been conducting an All Kerala Inter-collegiate Quiz completion for Prof. Kadambaran namboothiri Memorial Ever rolling Trophy in commemoration with our first and former Head of the Department of Botany every year since 2003. Students from various colleges of Universities of Kerala, had been participating in the inter collegiate quiz. St. Teresas College, Ernakulam, St. Thomas College, Pala, N.S.S. Hindu College, Changanacherry were 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize winners respectively.


Bio diversity consideration of River Pampa

The Post graduate and research department of Zoology in collaboration with Pampa Parirakshana Samithi organized the workshop on Bio-diversity consideration in Pampa river basin at Environmental resource centre, Poovathoor, Kozhencherry. Programme was supported by Kerala Biodiversity Board. Noted environmentalist participated in the function.


Re defining Philosophy in the Realm of Globalisation

A Seminar was organized by the department of Philosophy, the programme was inaugurated by Adv. P.K. Narayana Panicker, Honarable General Secretary, Nair Service Society. Dr. K.S. Radhakrishnan, Former Vice Chancellor, Sree Sankara University presented the theme paper.


Three day training programme General Informatics

Three day training programme in General Informatics was organized by the Dept. of Botany in association with Kerala State Higher Education Council for the selected teachers of the college.


Workshop on Open Courses

A workshop jointly organized by all departments of the college under the auspicious of CBCS system of the college for the Fourth semester degree students to facilitate them to select their open course.


Programmes organized by the Womens Cell 2010-11

Womens cell of this college has organized various programmes for which are listed below.

a) Conducted counseling classes for girl students of various departments during the month of August 2010.

b) Supervised and arranged regular training for students regarding general cleanliness and hygiene.

c) Made efforts to resolve grievances of girl students

d) Proper encouragement and inspiration had given for students to participate in arts and sports competition.


COLLEGE UNION ACTIVITIES

The College Union election was held in 01-10-2010 in a very harmonious atmosphere under the leadership of Dr. K.N. Viswanathan Nair, Returning officer of the Election.

The following teachers act in an advisory capacity to the College Union Dr. K.N. Viswanathan Nair, Staff Advisor Dr. C.S. Ajith Kumar, Managing Editor of the College Magazine, Dr. B. Udayanan, Arts Club President and Prof. N. Vijayakumar, Treasurer.

The College Union was inaugurated by eminent percurshnist Padmasree Mattannur Sankaran Kutty, Cine Artist Vinu Mohan was the chief guest of the occasion. College Union initiated number of programmes under the leadership Mr. Anson Thomas, Chairman and the college union representatives.


Various programmes under UGC assistance

Career and Counselling Cell

In association with career and Guidance cell, we are providing career guidance counselling and placement in banks and IT sector. This years programme started with a counselling session to the new comers on 15-6- 2010. Dr. George Jacob, the UGC trained member has conducted a training programme on how to win interview for final year PG students. In addition to this various training programmes were carried out in relation with Computer education, stress management and personality development.

A special training programme was organized for selected students on personality development, under the leadership of Sri Alphonse Kannanthanam on 10-11 December 2010.


Coaching for Entry in Services

Coaching for entry in Services for UPSC and PSC examinations was conducted successfully during the academic year. The scheme co-ordinator is Dr. P.S. Gopakumar. The scheme was formally inaugurated by Dr. K. Jayakumar (Addl. Chief Secretary, Govt. of Kerala). 86 students were enrolled in the civil service coaching. A two month crash coaching programme for PSC Examination has also been organized.


Remedial coaching for SC/ST, OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) and Minorities

In order to enable students belonging to SC/ST, OBC (Non creamy layer) and minorities who need remedial coaching to come to the level necessary for pursuing higher studies efficiently and to reduce their failure and drop-out rates the UGC provides financial assistance for conducting special classes outside the regular time table during the eleventh plan. Students belonging to other backward classes and general candidates are also allowed to obtain the benefits of such coaching classes. Under this scheme Rs. 1000000/- was sanctioned for our college and Rs. 520000/- was received as the first installment which was utilized fully. This programme was meant for graduate and post graduate students of the college and all the departments conducted it successfully. During this academic year 389 hours were taken by the various departments. Guest faculty of the college and resource persons from outside the college engaged the classes during extra hours and holidays. 1100 graduate and post graduate students belonging to SC/ST, OBC (Non creamy layer), minorities and others attended these classes. The classes helped the students to improve their linguistic proficiency, level of comprehension of basic subjects and academic skills. The programme also provided proper guidance and training to enable the students to come up to the level necessary for pursuing higher studies. Dr. C. Jayachandran, Co-ordinator.


NET/SET Coaching

The UGC NET coaching programme, as part of the XIth plan assistance was inaugurated by Prof. R. Prasannakumar, secretary, N.S.S. Colleges Central Committee on 6 July, 2010. The programme was executed effectively. More than 50 classes were conducted. Eminent scholars gave lectures. A model examination was conducted on 18th December 2010. Prof. P.K. Rajappan Nair & Prof. V. Reghunath are the co-ordinators.


HEPSEN

Objective : This scheme is meant for students who are physically disabled or visually impared or mentally retarded.

We have introduced many programmes such as counselling discussions, study classes, advices by experts in this field during the academic year 2010-11. As per the scheme to help visually impared students, we bought a computer and scanner and installed a special software for them. A separate room is also opened for these students. We have received the services of Dr. Sani and Mrs. Betty who are expert advisors in this field. We have also planned to provide low visual aids to the students. Prof. V.S. Sasikumar is the co-ordinator.


OTHER ACTIVITIES

Tutorial Meeting (2010-2011)

Tutorial meetings were effectively arranged by all departments for all the classes with the help of Heads, class tutors and teaching faculty on two days, 27-9-2010 19-01-2011. Academic aspects like internal examination marks, general discipline, attendance shortage, use of library resource, and difficulties facing by students, if any, were discussed in those meetings and remedial measures were taken.


Parent Teacher Association

Parent Teacher Association of our college has been functioning with a nine member executive committee with Dr. Gopakumar P.S., Dept. of Zoology as secretary and Sri. Premchand Maveli as Vice President. Three executive meetings were held during the academic year.

PTA is giving the whole hearted support and assistance to various academic and co curricular activities in the college. A merit day to felicitate students excelled in academic and sports activities will be organized in the 2nd of March. The annual general body meeting and sound off to the retiring staff will be organized in the last week of March.


Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC)

IQAC is a formal academic body in our college constituted as per the guidelines given by the National assessment and Accreditation council, which stands for all over development of the college. The functioning of IQAC in the college is spread over almost all the activities of the college. In addition to the formal IQAC, ten sub committees were constituted for the active involvement of all the teachers. Dr. K.N. Viswanathan Nair is the co-ordinator of the IQAC and its sub committees. In the sub committees all the departments have representation. Each sub committee is steered by a convener who has close contact with IQAC.


CBCS SYSTEM

Dr. P.K. Padmakumar, Dept. of Botany, the coordinator for the choice based credit and semester system during the academic system. We have introduced the system very effective in the college. A three day training programme for selected teachers on General Informatics and a workshop on open course were organized for students. I thank the general co-ordinator and department co-ordinators for the successful implementation of the scheme.


EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

There are three ongoing UGC sponsored Add on courses.

1. A programe in Creative Communication and Spoken English is offered by the department of English. Dr. Sujatha S. is the co-ordinator of the course.

2. The department of Hindi offers a course in Translation proficiency in Hindi, Dr. K.V. Narayana Kurup is the course co-ordinator.

The department of Economics offers a course in Travel and Tourism. Prof. P.K. Madhusoodanan Nair is the co-ordinator of the course.

The college offers the following computer courses for the students.

  • Computerised Financial Accounting (Tally)


  • Word Processing and Data Entry


  • Web designing and Animation.

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION

REPORT 2010-2011

Department organised the MG University Southzone Intercollegiate Shuttle Badminton Tournament,MG University Southzone Intercollegiate Table Tennis Tournament, Coaching camp of MG. university ball badminton teams (Men & Women) And coaching camp of Kottayam District Ball Badminton Teams.

Department conducted the Annual Athletic Meet on 4-2-2011 at College stadium and Interhouse Tournaments during the last week of January and first week of February.


ACHIEVEMENTS

This year our college Ball badminton team won the Kottayam District Championship.

Shiji P.L., Maya C., Divya , Reshma N., Raji A. represented Kerala State in the South Zone Senior Ball Badminton championship at Dindivanam

Women won the first place in the MG University Championship. The highlight is that the team lifted the MG University championship for the 12th consecutive year, won the first place in the All Kerala Inter Collegiate Tournament held at SNM Training College, Moothakunnam, won the second place in the Kerala State senior Ball Badminton Championship at Neyyattinkara, representing Kottayam District.Ball badminton team (Men) won the first place in the Berthalomia Trophy all Kerala Inter collegiate Tournament at Thevara,won the second place in the MG University Championship held at Poothotta, won the second place in the All Kerala Inter Collegiate Tournament held at Moothakunnam

Our Body Building Team won the second place in the MG University competition held at Thevara.Sri. Vinayak M. Das of II M.Com was adjudged as Mr. M.G. University.

Arun raj S.L. Represented Kerala State in the South Zone Ball Badminton Championship held at Dindivanam. Reshma N. II BA was adjudged as the Best Player in the all Kerala Tournament held at Moothakunnam.

Shiji P.L., Maya C., Divya , Reshma N., Raji A. represented Kottayam District in the Kerala State Senior Ball Badminton Championship and secured second place at Neyyattinkara.

Sachu Salim won the third place in the AIIU Tournament, representing MG University Body Building team.Vinayak M. Das, Sachu Salim and Saneesh represented Kerala State in the National Championship.


NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME

The N.S.S. Units of the college have organised and conducted a wide variety of activities during the current academic year. The direction of the M.G. University have limited the number of N.S.S. units to two.

The principal in charge Prof. N. Vijayakumar inaugurated the activities of the year on 17th July 2010. An orientation class was conducted by Prof. K.V. Surendranath former NSS co-ordinator of M.G. university.

The university level inaugration of agreement campaign for Eye Donation was launched from our college.

The Honarable Vice Chancellor, Dr. Rajan Gurukkal inaugurated the campaign and Hon'ble Nair Service Society General Secretary Adv. P.K. Narayana Panicker blessed the occasion. Syndicate member Prof. V.N. Chandramohan and Dr. Rajasekhara Pillai, NSS Laison officer Prof. Anitha Sankar and NSS Coordinator Dr. R. Prakash were present.

Public property conservation day was observed on Ist November in association with legal cell and it was inaugurate by Sri. J. Nazar, CJM Changanacherry.

The NSS unit received the Best Blood donation Institution award constituted by the Blood Donation Form in a felicitation conducted on CMS college on 2nd November.

KSTP has selected volunteers from our unit for Road survey at Changanacherry and give training for survey.

They participated in the survey of AC Road.

The NSS units have been successful in fulfilling the dream of plastic free campus. The volunteers took the inititive to incite a social awakening among students by holding discussion in all classes about the ill effects of plastic

Several one-day camps were conducted to promote personality developmentof students. 42 volunteers participated in the three day Inter collegiate campus conducted by other colleges.

The annual camp was conducted from December 23rd to 29th at St. Marys L.P. School, Ithithanam with the co-operation of Kurichi Grama Panchayath. Sri. C.F. Thomas MLA, Changanacherry inaugurated the camp.

Jobel junction Thachakunnam road was reconstructed during the camp.


NCC ARMY WING

REPORT 2010-2011

NCC Army Wing Cadets of this college has been performed exceptionally well in this year as usual.

The authorized strength of this Sub-Unit is 160 including SD and SW [33%]. Almost all cadets have participated in the Annual training Camp, Ithithanam in May & August 2010. Two Cadets participated in the Army Attachment Camp at Pangode, Trivandrum. Two cadets participated in the National Integration Camp, at Sanand, Gujrat in November 2010 and two cadets participated in the Special NIC, Hyderabad.

Sgt. Unny Varghese, IBSc Physics, represented, our college in the prestigious Republic Day Parade at New Delhi 2010-2011

S/UO. Prasanth S, I MA English, U/O Jayaraj III BSc Chemistry and U/O Sreejith Nair, III BSc Mathsselected to the Indian Army and Indian air Force this year.

Sixty cadets selected to assist the police forces in Changanacherry as Special Police Officers in connection with the Elections to the Local Bodies in Kerala 2010.

Thirty cadets could participate in the Traffic Assistance Programme of Changanacherry Police to curb the traffic problems here.

The pass in the B certificate Examination is 96% and C Certificate Examination is 90%

Cadets actively participated in the Special Parades on Aug 15 and Republic Day on 26th January 2011. Our Principal Dr. M.P. Rajan addressed and inspected the Guard of Honor. Cadets offered a Guard of Honor to the Hon. Vice-Chancellor of M.G.University during his visit to our college this year.

During this year, our cadets have shown their discipline, confidence and maturity in maintaining the discipline of the campus sans any problems and actively participated in almost all activities of NCC


CONCLUSION

2010-11 was a memorable year for the college in its various fields of activity. We have consistently produced a very high percentage of results in all disciplines taught in our college both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Members of our faculty were engaged in various curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and lifted the esteem of our institution high in other places.

The college is managed by Nair Service Society, the foremost educational agency in Kerala. The management shows keen interest in the overall development of the college. I remember, with utmost sincere gratitude, the Hon. Gen.secretary Sri. P.K. Narayana Panicker, Hon. Secretary Sri. G. Sukumaran Nair and the respected Secretary NSS Colleges Central Committee Prof. R. Prasannakumar for their sincere guidance and unstinted support.

I take this opportunity to thank all my colleagues, members of non-teaching staff, students, office bearers of the college union, Office bearers and members of PTA etc for their whole-hearted co-operation and good will. My special thanks are due to Prof. N. Vijayakumar, Prof. V. Rajamohanan Nair, Prof. C. Sobhana Rani, Prof. C. Balachandran, Dr. P.S. Gopakumar & G. Harikumar who managed the College affairs when ever I was engaged with other duties. I deeply regret, if any, programmes or names of persons are not mentioned in this report.

I am concluding this brief report on the activities of the academic year 2010-11 with the fervent hope that our institution will reach further heights in coming days.

Once again, I wish all final year students a very bright future.
