ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012

Dr. M.P.Rajan, Principal

It is my privilege and pleasure to present before you a brief report of the activities of the academic year 2011-12. But before I enter into my presentation, we must remember with gratitude the support and guidance of a visionary spirit, late Adv. P.K. Narayana Panicker Sir, Former President, Nair Service Society, on this occasion. His memory will always be cherished by our institution.

2011-12 has been a very rewarding year for the college both in the curricular and co-curricular fields. We were accredited by NAAC at the B++level in 2006 and is set for re-accreditation soon which makes our responsibility even higher and hope that the college will be able to reach the heights it well deserves.

1.Courses and Student Strength

Our college offers 14 UG and 11 PG courses and has about 2000 students on its roll. In addition, we also offer Certificate and Add on courses. UG courses follow the choice based Credit and Semester System, following the re-structuring of the UG courses by MG University since 2009.

2.University Ranks

This year, in the academic field, our students brought laurels to the institution by the remarkable achievement of a I rank and II Rank in MA History, III Rank in MA Hindi, III Rank in BA Hindi and II Rank in B.Sc. Food Science.

On behalf of the entire college community, I extend my sincere appreciation to all of them and congratulate them for their remarkable achievements. I also congratulate the head and faculty members of History, Hindi and Food Science, whose sincerity and dedication led to such laudable achievements.

3.Membership of faculties in the Academic-Professional bodies of M.G. University.

It is a matter of great privilege that Dr. Sujatha S. (Head, Dept. of English) and Dr. K.V. Narayana Kurup (AssociateProfessor, Dept. of Hindi) have been selected to the Syndicate of M G University, Kottayam.

Dr. Sujatha S is the Convenor of the Syndicate standing committee on Research & Development and member of the committees on Academic affairs, Planning & Development, Legal Affairs, Examinations and Finance. She is the advisory board member of the National Service Scheme of MG university.

Dr. K.V. Narayana Kurup is the Convenor of the Syndicate standing committee on Students Grievance Cell and member of the committees on Affiliation, Examinations, Research & development and Staff.

Under the auspices of College council a function was organised to honour them. Sri. K.N. Viswanathan Pillai, Registrar, Nair Service society was the Chief guest.

4.University Examination Results

7.UGC Grants Sanctioned

UGC sanctioned about 4.5 crores as grant for the XIth plan period. The grant was utilized to install Digital Library, Computer Lab, Updating Website, Language Lab, Virtual Classroom in History Block, Rennovation of the Old Seminar Hall, Public Address system in all class rooms and departments, Generator to Main Block, LCD & Laptops to all departments, Smart Boards, Green Boards, Laboratory Equipments, Computers, Construction of New Ladies Toilet, PG development assistance to 11 departments, 8 National Seminars etc. I appreciate Dr. Sujatha S., General convener, and all committee members of the UGC cell for their sincere efforts.

8.UGC National Seminars

This year, the PG departments of Hindi, Politics, History, Zoology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics conducted UGC sponsored National Seminars.

PG Dept. of Hindi

A Three Day National Seminar on "Aspects of Contemporary Hindi Literature" conducted on 24, 25 and 26th August 2011. The seminar was inaugurated by Prof. R. Prasannakumar, Secretary, NSS College's Central Committee and Principal presided over the function. Dr. Gangaprasad Vimal (Former Director, Central Hindi Directorate, Delhi), Prof. K. Radhakrishnan Nair, member Syndicate, Dr. P.K. Padmakumar, Member Senate, Dr. C.S. Ajith Kumar, Member Senate, Prof. Shrikumari Pillai and Dr. K.V. Narayanakurup spoke on the occasion. Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Dubey, Dr. Santhi Nair, Dr. Padmapriya, Dr. Sunitha Manjan Bale, Dr. B. Vijayakumar presented theme papers. Prof. P. Madhavan pillai was the chief guest on the valedictory function.

PG Dept of Politics

The PG Department of Politics organized a UGC National Seminar on "Climate Change: New Challenges in Human rights" on 20th and 21st October 2011. Important Dignitaries attended. Prof. N.R. Madhavamenon (Chief Guest), Dr. J. Prabhash (Pro-Vice Chancellor, University of Kerala), Dr. Gopakumar (Dean, University of Kerala), Dr. Dattesh Parulekkar (Goa), Dr. Lokanathan (Manipal), K.M. Roy (Journalist) etc/UGC Sanctioned Rs.1,10,000 for the seminar.

PG Dept of History

The PG department of History conducted a National Seminar on "Linkages of Indian Trade - The Medieval South" on 19th and 20th December, 2011. Dr. M.G.S. Narayanan was the Chief Guest. Dr. K.N. Ganesh, Dr. Alex Mathew, Dr. M.N. Rajesh, Dr. Barkur Udaya, Dr. Mujeeb Rehman, Dr. Venugopal B. Menon, Dr. K.S. Mathew, Dr. N. Chandramouli, Dr. Joseph Thekkedam, Dr. K. Sadasivan, Prof. P. Vasumathi Devi presented theme papers. Dr. N. Jayaraj (Member, Legislative Assumbly of Kerala) was the Chief Guest for Valedictory function, Prof. R. Prasannakumar, N.S.S. College's central Commitee Secretary gave the valedictory address. Dr. Sr. Suma Rose, Principal, Assumption college released the proceedings.

PG dept of Zoology

The PG & Research Dpartment of Zoology conducted another UGC Seminar on "Conservation of the Marine environment and Management of Marine fisheries" on 24th and 27th February 2012. Sri. T.P. Sreenivasan, Vice Chairman, Kerala State Higher Education Council inaugurated the academic function. Dr. Sivakumar M., Dr. Ramachandra Naik, Dr. S. Bijoy Nandan, Dr. K. Sunilkumar Muhammad, Dr. J. Raveendran, Dr. R. Jyothi Babu presented theme papers. Prof. R. Prasannakumar, N.S.S. College's Central Commitee Secretary was the Chief Guest for the Validictory Function.

PG Dept of Physics

The Post Graduate Department of Physics conducted two day National Seminar on "Current Trends in Materials Science" on 7th and 8th March 2012 Prof(Dr). Rajasekharan Pillai [Executive Vice- President - & Principal Secretary, Science & Technology Department, Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, TVM] was the chief guest. Dr. M.R. Anantharaman, (Professor & HOD - Physics, CUSAT, Kochi, Dr.P.S. Anilkumar, Associate Professor in Physics, IISC, Banglore, Dr. N.V. Unnikrishnan (Director, SPAP, MG University, Kottayam) Dr. V.P. Mahadevan Pillai(Professor & Head, Dept. of Opto-Electronics, University of Kerala, TVM)Dr. George Varghese (Professor & HOD- Physics, Calicut University, Kozhikode.Dr.C.K. Mahadevan (Associate Professor in Physics, ST Hindu College, Nagercoil) Dr. Rajesh.V. Nair (Scientist, Bhabha Atomic Research Center, Mumbai and recipient of young Scientist Award 2011-2012) Were the invited speakers.

PG Dept of Chemistry

The PG department of Chemistry organised a UGC National Seminar on "Uptrends in Chemical Sciences and Technology" on 15th and 16 March 2011. Dr. B. Venkitaraman, Associate Director, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic research inaugurated the academic function. Prof. R. Prasannakumar [Secretary, NSSCollege's Central Committee] presided over the meeting. Prinicipal Dr. M.P. Rajan delivered introductory remarks. Dr. K.V. Narayanakurup [Member, Syndicate, M.G. University] Prof. S. Chandrasekharan Nair [Former Head, Chemistry], Dr. G. Pramod (Convenor), Prof. Raji N. Ramachandran [General Convener & HOD] addressed the gathering. Dr. Prakash kumar [Joint Director, Inter University Instrumentation Centre, Mahatma Gandhi University] released the proceedings of the Seminar. Theme papers in various Technical Sessions, were presented by eminent academicians like Santhiswaroop Bhatnagar awardees, Dr. T. Pradeep [Professor, Iit. c], Prof. A. Ajayaghosh [Csir- OScientist & Dean, Academy of Scientific And Innovative Research, Niist, Trivandrum] Prof.. Santhanu Bhattacharya (IISc, Bangalore), Prof. A.K. Mishra, (IIT Chennai) & Dr. Y.S. Mayya (BARC, Mumbai). 25 research papers were presented by the researchers. A total of 150 deligates attended the seminar. Best Oral and Poster presentations were awarded Cash Prizes in the Valedictory function by the Chief Guest Dr. Y.S. Mayya, outstanding scientist from BARC and Dr. K. Thulaseedharan Nair, Controller of Administration, KSCSTE, TVM, delivered the Keynote Address and distributed the certificates.

PG Dept of Mathematics

The PG department of Mathematics organised a UGC National Seminar on "Modern Analysis and its applications" on 23rd and 26th March 2012. Smt. Sheela Thomas IAS (Chairman, Rubber Board, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India) was the chief guest. Dr. T. Thrivikraman, Dr. S.H. Kulkarni (Head, IIT Chennai) Dr. Sunny Kuriakose, Dr. M. Thampan Nair (IIT Chennai), Dr. G. Rajendran (Kongu Engineering College, Erode, Dr. Vinod Kumar (CUSAT) presented theme papers. Prof. R. Prasannakumar, N.S.S. College's Central Commitee Secretary was the Chief Guest for the Valedictory Function.

PG Dept of Commerce

PG department of commerce is organising two day National Seminar which is to be conducted in April 2012.

9.Inauguration of the New Human Resource Centre

Human resource centre was inaugurated on 13th February 2012. Sri. K.R. Rajan, Secretary Human Resoruce Centre, NSS Head Quarters was the chief guest. Adv. Sindhu delivered the keynote address on the occasion.

10.All Kerala Inter-Collegiate Quiz competition organised by Dept. of Botany

The Kadambaran Namboothiri Memorial All Kerala Inter Collegiate quiz competition was held on 16th December 2011. 32 teams from various colleges of Kerala participated. Mar Ivanious college team won the Trophy and a cash award of Rs. 5000/-. St. Thomas College, Pala and RIT Pampady won the second and Third prizes respectively.

The department conducted National Environment awareness campaign funded by the ministry of environment and forests, Government of India. As part of this the department distributed seedlings, conducted trining programmes for planting trees, and conducted a seminar on bio - diversity conservation.

11.CBCSS Vth & VI Semesters

After successfully completing the four semesters, we are in the last year in CBCSS pattern for UG level. in the V th Sem we have 15 open courses conducted by various departments including Physical Education department. Students selected the course as per their choice. In the VI th Sem we have successfully completed core choice based course and projects in UG departments. Dr. P.K. Padmakumar has monitored the system effectively.

12.Examination system

The entire examination of the college - Internal and External is functioning really well. Prof. V.N. Ramachandran Pillai, Dept. of Mathematics has been entrusted to conduct the examinations.

13.College Union Activities

The College Union election was held on 01-10-2011 in a very harmonious atmosphere under the leadership of Prof. P.S. Sasidharan Nair, Returning officer of the Election.

The following teachers act in an advisory capacity to the College Union - Prof. S. Anandakuttan Nair, Staff Advisor Prof. P.K. Rajagopal, Managing Editor of the College Magazine, Prof. T. Geetha, Arts Club President and Prof. R. Shylaja, Treasurer.

The College Union was inaugurated by Cine Artist Bhagath, Njeralathu Harigovindan was the Chief guest of the occasion. College Union initiated number of programmes under the leadership of Mr. Anandan R.S., Chairman and the college union representatives.

14.Career and Counselling Cell

The career and counselling cell of our college has to its credit the maximum number of students being recruited to various multinational companies through out the country through campus selection. Prof. Rajalekshmy R, Head, Dept. of botany who is in charge of this cell showed maximum efforts in achieving this out come by attaining maximum placements in various organisations.

Various companies meritoriously selected the following students.

  • Campus recruitment for Wipro technologies conducted on 7th January 2012. 6 PG students of this institution got placements.

  • Campus recruitment for HP India, conduct on 12th January 2012 selected Anjaly Anand of III DC botany.

  • Campus recruitment for Excel computers selected 5 students from commerce departments.

15.Coaching for Entry in Services

Coaching for entry in Services for UPSC and PSC examinations was conducted successfully during the academic year. A two month crash coaching programme for PSC Examination has also been organized. The scheme co-ordinator is Dr. T.P. Vinu, Dept. of Physics.

16.Remedial coaching for SC/ST, OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) and Minorities

In order to enable students belonging to SC/ST, OBC (Non creamy layer) and minorities who need remedial coaching to come to the level necessary for pursuing higher studies efficiently and to reduce their failure and drop-out rates the UGC provides financial assistance for conducting special classes outside the regular time table during the eleventh plan. Students belonging to other backward classes and general candidates are also allowed to obtain the benefits of such coaching classes. The classes helped the students to improve their linguistic proficiency, level of comprehension of basic subjects and academic skills. The programme also provided proper guidance and training to enable the students to come up to the level necessary for pursuing higher studies. Dr. Sujatha S. is co-ordinating the activities.

17.NET/SET Coaching

The UGC NET coaching programme, as part of the XI plan assistance was executed effectively. More than 50 classes were conducted. Eminent scholars gave lectures. A model examination was conducted on 18th December 2010. Prof. P.K. Rajappan Nair & Prof. Gopikrishnan G. are the co-ordinators.

18.Other activities

Tutorial Meeting (2011-2012)

Tutorial meetings were effectively arranged by all departments for all the classes with the help of Heads, class tutors and teaching faculty on two days, 27-9-2010 and 19-01-2011. Academic aspects like internal examination marks, general discipline, attendance shortage, use of library resource, and difficulties facing by students, if any, were discussed in those meetings and remedial measures were taken. Prof. Shylaja and Prof. Jayasree co-ordinated the above functions well.

Parent Teacher Association Merit day celebration

Merit day celebrations were conducted on 9th March 2012 in the college seminar hall. The inaugural address was delivered by Prof. R. Prasannakumar, Secretary, NSS College's central committee who distributed the awards to the students.

PTA felicitated Dr. Sujatha S. and Dr. K.V. Narayanakurup, Members of Syndicate MG University, Kottayam. Prof. G. Harikumar, Chairman, tournament committee ball badminton federation of India was also felicitated.

On 19th March 2012 PTA executive committee convened a meeting and decided to arrange send off to the members of staff of this college (Teaching and Non Teaching) who are retiring from the service this year. The function will be held on 28th March 2012 and will be inaugurated by Prof. R. Prasannakumar, NSS Colleges Central Committee Secretary.

19.Extension activities

There are three ongoing UGC sponsored Add on courses.

1.Add on Course in "Creative Communication and Spoken English" is offered by the department of English. Dr. Sujatha S. is the co-ordinator of the course.

2.The department of Hindi offers a course in "Translation proficiency in Hindi", Dr. K.V. Narayana Kurup is the course co-ordinator.

3.The department of Economics offers a course in "Travel and Tourism". Prof. P.K. Madhusoodanan Nair is the co-ordinator of the course. All the three courses are doing well.

College also offers the following computer courses for the students.

  • Basic Office Automation

  • Computerised Financial Accounting (Tally)

  • Word Processing and Data Entry

  • Web designing and Animation.

Dr. E.B. Suresh Kumar is the Co-ordinator of the computer courses. All the courses are functioning in the best matter possible.

20.NCC Army

Five Cadets from our college have participated in the National Integration Camp at Madhya Pradesh and six Cadets at NIC Gujarat this year.

Open Course - Defence and Strategic Studies - Inauguration

Open Course as a part of CBCSS system - Defence and Strategic Studies - attached to the Department of Political Science in the CBCSS system. Brig. C. Sandeep Kumar VSM, the Hon'ble Deputy Director General, NCC Kerala and Lakshadweep - former student of this college, inaugurated the Open Course. This course with 47 students/cadets was under the supervision of Capt. Dr. B. Udayanan and completed successfully with 100 % results.

SUO Unni Varghese, II DC Physics - represented the prestigious Republic Day Parade at New Delhi last year. Cadet Manu Mohan, I DC Physics has successfully completed the formalities of the induction to NDA in this February.

21.Report Of National Service Scheme

Three units of the National Service Scheme function in the college under the leadership of Prof. M.V. Suresh, Dr. P. Jayasree, Dr. M. Indulekha . The aim of the scheme is to create social awareness and personality development among the students.

22.Important activities during the academic year 2011 - 2012

  • Seven day camp was conducted.

  • One special Camp was conducted from 23rd to 29th 2011 at Govt. Higher Secondary School, Vazhappally.

  • All NSS volunteers actively participated and presented an eventful cultural float in connection with Changanacherry Boat race committee.

  • Conducted a rally and also shared the problems of the inmates of the Itthithanam Old Age Home during the Gandhi Jayanti day.

  • Conducted a special programme " Food Supply Programme" among the inmates of the kunnamthanam old age home during the day of Thursday in every week.

  • Fifty volunteers donated their blood to district level blood donation forum.

  • Conducted a PusthakaThottil Programme and celebrated Women's day programme on 8th September 2012.

23.Department of physical education

Spectacular achievements of Sports Department, are there in the year 2011-12 for the department of Physical Education

  • Reshma R. win the "Star of India" award in the senior National Ball Badminton Championship representing Kerala State.

  • Ball Badminton team (Men) Team won the M.G. University Championship 2011-2012.

  • Ball Badminton team (Men)won the Fr. Berthalomean Trophy. All Kerala Tournament held at Thevara

  • Ball Bandminton (Women) Team won II Place in the M.G. University Championship 2011-12.

  • Rajeesh R. (I M.Com) Shineesh Kumar (I BA), Arun Raj S.L. (I BA), Pranav P. (II BA) represented MG university in the All India Inter University Championship.

  • Dhaneesh Kumar, III B.Sc. was adjudged as Mr. M.G. University in Body building.

  • Arun A.S., I BA Economics,got Ist Place in Kerala State Body Building Championship, Member, M.G. University Team.

Department of Philosophy conducted a series of talks on "The philosophy of Self Management" by eminent scholars like Sri. Jaymohan, MD, Synteras INC, Washington on 10- 8-2011, Prof. Ettumanoor Somadasan famous poet and writer on 13-9-2011, Dr. P.P. Kaimal former Head, Dept. of Zoology on 20-12-2011 and Dr. Vandana Blakrishnan Asst. Professor, Dept. of Physiology, Amrutha Institute Of Medical Sciences on 21-2-2012.The teachers and students of the department offered awareness classes on women empowerment, teenage care, drug abuse, misuse of electronic media etc. to different strata of society.

Department of Commerce conducted a National Seminar on "Business sustainability" and "Indian Economy - opportunities and challenges" during the month, January 2012, inaugurated by Principal, Dr. M.P. Rajan; Keynote address was delivered by Dr. Stephen Mathew, Dean and Faculty member of XLRA, Bangalore and Sri. unnikrishnan Nair, Chairman and C.E.O. of Thermax Ltd. Pune, Department also propose to conduct a UGC Sponsored National Seminar on "Recent Developments in Accounting" during March 2012.

The department organised a series of lectures and workshops during the year 2011-2012.

24.Department of Zoology

UGC Sponsored National Seminar on "Conservation of the Marine Environment and Management of Marine Fisheries" in collaboration with National Institute of Oceanography Cochin, was organised on 24th and 27th February 2012. It was inaugurated by Sri. T.P. Sreenivasan, Vice Chairman, Kerala State Higher Education Council. Renowned scientists from College of fisheries, Bangalore, Central Marine Research Institute, Kochi, National Institute of Oceanography and School of Marine Science, Kochi presented theme papers. Valedictory function was inaugurated and certificates were distributed by Prof. R. Prasannakumar, Secretary, NSS College'sCentral Committee. An exhibition on Marine Diversity and Conservation was conducted.

  • Arranged a one day training programme on apiculture to students at "Malanadu" Kanjirappally.

  • Research Review of 8 research scholars of the research department was organised on 10-11-2011.

  • Talk on "Man and Environment" Dr. Sanal Kumar, NSS College Pandalam was organised on 15-12-2011.

  • Workshop on Tools and Techniques in Biotechnology by Dr. Pradeepkumar, Bangalore was organised on 8-2-2012.

  • Workshop on New Avenues in Bio-Science was organised by Ist Batch M.Sc. (1984-86) Alumni Scientists on 10-2-2012.

25.Department of Philosophy

Department of Philosophy conducted a series of talks on "The philosophy of Self Management" by eminent scholars like Sri. Jaymohan, MD, Synteras INC, Washington on 10- 8-2011, Prof. Ettumanoor Somadasan famous poet and writer on 13-9-2011 , Dr. P.P. Kaimal former Head, Dept. of Zoology on 20-12-2011 and Dr. Vandana Blakrishnan Asst. Professor, Dept. of Physiology, Amrutha institute of Medical Sciences on 21-2-2012.The teachers and students of the department offered awareness classes on women empowerment, teenage care, drug abuse, misuse of electronic media etc. to different strata of society.

CONCLUSION

2011-12 was a memorable year for the college in its various fields of activity. We have consistently produced a very high percentage of results in all disciplines taught in our college both at undergraduate and post-graduate levels. Members of our faculty were engaged in various curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and lifted the esteem of our institution high in other places.

The college is managed by Nair Service Society, the foremost educational agency in Kerala. The management shows keen interest in the overall development of the college. I remember, with utmost sincere gratitude, the Hon. Gen.secretary Sri. P.K. Narayana Panicker, Hon. Secretary Sri. G. Sukumaran Nair and the respected Secretary NSS College's Central Committee Prof. R. Prasannakumar for their sincere guidance and unstinted support.

I take this opportunity to thank all my Colleagues, Teachers and Members of non-teaching staff, Students, Secretary, College Council, Office bearers of the College Union,Office bearers and members of PTA etc for their whole-hearted co-operation and good will. My special thanks are due to Prof. N. Vijayakumar, Prof. V. Rajamohanan Nair, Prof. V.N. Ramachandran Pillai, Prof. Rajalekshmi, Prof. Raji N. Ramachandran, Prof. C.Sobhana Rani, Prof. C. Balachandran, Dr. P.S. Gopakumar & G. Harikumar who managed the College affairs when ever I was engaged with other duties. I deeply regret, if any, programmes or names of persons are not mentioned in this report.

I conclude this brief report on the activities of the academic year 2011-12 with the fervent hope that our institution will reach further heights in the coming days.

Once again, I wish all final year students a very bright future.
